Sometimes being a parent is just an endless search for fun and social activities to do with our children. I was once again looking for a new activity to do with my son, now that he was a bit too restless to take to Mums and Bubs Pilates or to sit with me at a cafe while I drank coffee with my girlfriends.
At 13 months old, he loves music, and has started responding to the songs I sing to him by clapping his hands and shaking his head back and forth. Boppin' Babies sounded like the perfect thing to try out for my budding musician.
Boppin' Babies is an music early learning program for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers and their parents. It is conducted with a music therapy focus and designed to help our children grow into happy and confident little people. It teaches them to respond to and experience fun through music.

There are weekly music classes held in locations all across Brisbane. The sessions are adorably named, and fit into the below age groups:
- Boppin' Babies: Newborn to 12 months
- Rockin' Tots: 13 months to 2.5 years
- Mini Mus-Ohs: 2.5 to 3.5 years
- Pre-Prep Rockstars: 3.5 to 4 years
Because the sessions are age appropriate, they are aimed to develop the skills suited to the age. Classes are run by experienced staff and the whole program was designed by a registered music therapist.
The classes are term based and run once a week for ten weeks. You can start by booking a trial session or with a three session starter pack. Or you can just sign up for a whole term. Prices are available on the website.
Because my son is13 months old, we have started in the Rockin' Tots group. Let me tell you, this has been such a positive experience and a great decision.
The first lesson he crawled right into the middle of the circle and was completely mesmerised by the lovely teacher who was strumming on the guitar and singing one of his favourite nursery rhymes.
After the teacher broke out the drums and egg shakers he almost lost mind from the excitement of it all. Never one to sit still, the group was so relaxed and fun that I didn't feel the need to keep bringing him back to me. He was free to dance and play to his hearts content.
A session of Boppin' Babies includes playing and singing along to live music, using musical instruments, jumping up and down on an assortment of bouncy things and having a ton of fun.
No two sessions are the same and even if your little one cannot focus for the full hour, they will get something out of it. Even if it is just the social interaction with other children and being in a new stimulating environment.
Your child can participate in their own way. You are singing along with them, so they can sit in your lap and be close to you if that is what they need. The sessions are aimed at teaching social, cognitive, physical, emotional and of course musical skills.
Boppin' Babies caters to all children, including those with special needs. According to their website, the music therapists and music teachers have extensive experience working with children who have special needs, medical conditions and families from all cultural backgrounds.
If you can't afford the fees or cannot commit to a term, then there are free music sessions held in libraries in the Moreton Bay Region. Bookings are essential though so get in quick.
If you are looking for something that will set your next birthday party apart, you can also book Boppin' Babies for your child's birthday party. They can come to your home, park or hall and will bring everything musical to you.
Term one is already under way but it is not too late to join in the fun! See here for more details.
