Brisbane's oldest shopping arcades will bring festive fun this December with a lights and decoration installation and a Christmas market for visitors to enjoy.
With a rich history in Brisbane's story, The Brisbane Arcade was constructed in 1923 and the first store openings occurred in 1924. The Arcade was built with three levels of shops (basement, street, gallery levels) and is described as featuring flanking a lofty central gallery under a solid roof with clerestory lighting. Architectural details of interest include the Edwardian Baroque style street facades, original terrazzo stairs, balustrades and dado panelling.
Today it remains a "shopping destination" and is home to exclusive, refined and classic shops including The Tea Centre, the Pen Shop, Tree of Life, Stones Diamonds and more. It is sophisticated as well as accessible for all to explore.
This Christmas season be sure to take part in two free events which will get you in the festive mood.
Christmas Decoration Installation
The corridor of the arcade is decorated with over 6000 lights, a forest of Christmas trees, over 30 wreaths, more than 10,000 baubles, gift boxes, bows, stars and garlands. Something of a Brisbane Christmas institution, the decorations of this year's theme are bathed in pearl, warm gold lighting and snowflakes. The decorations appear to fall off the balconies of the three levels of the Arcade.
It is a stunning display suitable for adults and children to enjoy.
Christmas Markets
If you are planning your visit, consider coinciding it with the third annual Brisbane Arcade Christmas Markets which will held on Friday, 8th and Saturday, 9th December 2023. The markets will be held in the Queen Street Mall (opposite the Brisbane Arcade entrance) on:
8 December 2023 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM; and
9 December 2023, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
The stalls will feature the wares of the Arcades' resident shops so that very special gift will be waiting for you to find.
Both events are free. The heritage-listed Brisbane Arcade is open 7 days from 9am to 5pm.
