Visit Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium and see the new monument honouring and paying tribute to the achievements of the Australian women's soccer team, The Matildas.
Who are the Matildas?
The Matildas are officially Australia's National Soccer team and have become one of the most recognised and loved sporting groups in the country. The adoration of the team and the sport has escalated over recent years with an ever-growing fan base, particularly amongst women and girls for the skill, team support, and challenges shown by the team to conquer the world of soccer.
Affectionately known as "The Tillies", the team won the hearts of a nation as they courageously fought their way through a series of wins in the soccer
FIFA Women's World Cup in Brisbane in 2023. Fans screamed as players like ace striker
Sam Kerr, goalkeeper McKenzie Arnold and Courtney Vine weaved their magic and cut through the gaps and saved goals in an attempt to win the cup.
While the team fell slightly short in holding the cup aloft, there is no denying that they heralded a new era in women's soccer in Australia with a legion of supporters elevating them to hero status.
The Brisbane Mural
To honour the team, a bronze mural of the Tillies has been created and installed at the 52,000-seat Suncorp Stadium in Milton as a Participation Monument. It has been funded by the Queensland State Government as a permanent tribute to celebrate the Matildas' “extraordinary impact on women and girls' sport”.
The Queensland Minister for Sport said, "Minister for Sport Michael Healy
“The Matildas have inspired more women and girls to get involved in football, with a record 44 per cent increase in female player numbers statewide following the World Cup.
The artwork joins the collection of other public art pieces including the existing National Rugby League ( NRL) bronze statues of elite players, like Wally Lewis, Arthur (Artie) Beetson and Mal Meninga which are also permanent artworks at Suncorp.

I was one of the armchair viewers, who was new to the women's game but excited to see the team win matches and follow how far they would progress in the competition, so I was excited to find the monument and see those moments re-lived in art.
The Matildas monument is bolted to a wall and 5.5m long and 2.1m wide near the Stadium's southern entrance and was unveiled by the Premier, The Honourable
Steven Miles MP. It is a permanent installation which is free to view.

The visual art piece was created by Brisbane-based
Urban Art Projects (UAP) in consultation with
Football Australia .
The image is one of pure joy and excitement depicting the women's happiness during key moments during on-field play. To me, it is an expression of their commitment to and love for the game and exhilaration at the successes they achieved together. With fists pumping, smiles beaming on faces and running in motion, it captures those great Tillies moments of joy through the artwork.
