Services for those who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and October 15th is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. On this day, parents and families across Australia will honour their babies who passed away from miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death. An estimated one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage in Australia each year, while approximately 3,000 babies are either stillborn or die in the first 28 days after birth.

Grieving the loss of a pregnancy or infant can often be quite isolating. So we have compiled a list of services and events available in Brisbane if you feel like you need to reach out. You are not alone.
Sands is a miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death charity that operates across Australia, supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby, working to improve the care bereaved parents receive by healthcare professionals and breaking the silence and taboo of baby death in today's society.
As well as a 24/7 Support Line, they also have local support groups in Brisbane and Logan, where you can meet with other parents and get support. See here for more information on your local group.
Sands is also holding special remembrance events across the country to help families commemorate their babies during the month. On 14 October is Sands Walk to Remember, where you can take the steps your baby could not. See here for information on this day and where it will be held. Then on 15 October, you can light a candle to honour your loss.
Mater Mothers is sharing stories from women to remind you that you are not alone. By doing this they are honouring the brave journey some families face, and recognising babies who pass away from miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death.
On Sunday 14 October, parents and families are invited to a lighting ceremony to honour the babies who lip up the world for a short time. The event will be held at Mount Gravatt Cemetery. See here for more information on this ceremony.
Bears of Hope provides support and exceptional care for families who experience the loss of their baby. As well as offering professional support services, in October you can donate a Bears of Hope Gift Package to honour a precious baby. You can find out more about this here.
