If you fancy a bit of island calm mixed with some seriously good tunes, the 17th is set to unfurl on Minjerribah, also known as North Stradbroke Island. This is where world class musicians gather to play some rather excellent chamber music in an intimate venue, all while surrounded by the island's magnificent natural beauty. Think top shelf talent without the need for fancy dress or stiff upper lips.
This year, you can expect familiar faces like violinist Hed Yaron Meyerson, who juggles duties as associate concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Perth's acclaimed violist Sally Boud, and the piano duo of Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg, alongside the festival's regular inspirational musicians. For a bit of a delightful curveball on the Saturday evening, jazz trio Trichotomy are teaming up with African kora player Ziggi Mabeye Diagne for a brand new collaboration that sounds intriguing. The program apparently has subtle connections weaving through the pieces, composers and places, with Schubert making his presence felt like a friendly, musical ghost, inspiring everyone from Brahms to Dvorak and Coleridge Taylor. Other bits to keep an ear out for include Pavel Haas's electrifying string quartet 'From the Monkey Mountains', which surprisingly features a drum kit, and Lachlan Skipworth's 'Cavern' for alto flute and string quartet, performed by Tim Munro. Good news for those who prefer staying put: all six concerts will be held conveniently at the Point Lookout Community Hall, saving you from any island hopping between venues. So, if the idea of three days of great music, winter sunshine, a bit of surf, and perhaps spotting a few humpback whales sounds like your cup of tea, you know where to be.
