Located two hours from Brisbane,
Somerset Dam is ideal for families looking to turn off the mobile and turn on the fun. Surrounded by picturesque hills and offering great camping, swimming, boating, fishing, and relaxing, Somerset Dam is well worth the drive. There is a playground for the kiddies, electric barbeques, picnic tables, plenty of parking, and toilet facilities. Our first trip out there triggered a quick return.
If you are part of a family that loves boating, jet skis, wakeboarding, and/or tubing, the lake is calling you. Don't own any of those things? Do what we did and grab a kayak off Marketplace. Add on some mandatory lifejackets and you have yourself a great day trip or weekend away. We all need to spend more time outdoors and this is a great place to immerse in nature. My three kids absolutely beg me 'can we stay longer' each time we go and have become proficient at managing their kayaks. I attach a long rope to the vessel and anchor it to the shore to be on the safe side.
There are numerous camping sites on the drive into
The Spit where the majority of water lovers spend their time.
Lake Somerset Holiday Park also offers some great cabins, villas, and glamping options. It can get very busy at the water's edge on a hot day so be prepared to get there early if you wish to set up a gazebo and pop the boat/jetski in. Otherwise, you can simply set up in the park, grab a coffee and some iced drinks from the mobile vending van, utilize the barbeques, and splash in the netted-off swimming area.
If there has been recent rain, you can see a graceful waterfall pouring down the hill behind the lake. I love amateur photography so the photo opportunities around the water, in the hills, and at the weir are right up my alley. Wildlife is abundant in the region, and the water exhibits a lovely shade of turquoise in the sun. That reminds me ... don't forget the hats and sunscreen as they are a must.
There is a small convenience store that also sells camping basics and fuel just back from the dam, or a fifteen-minute drive will lead you into the surrounding towns to grab supplies. If you are keen to
fish , this a very popular destination with large flat areas and deep calm waters sporting some great bass and perch. The surrounding towns offer great fishing stores and all the advice you can process. If you are a pie lover, you just have to take the scenic trip home via the
Old Fernvale Bakery to decide whether this is the home of the best pie you have ever eaten. It is definitely a contender.
Looking for your next getaway with the kids? Find yourself immersed in Somerset Dam.
