The Workshop Rail Museum

by Sally Foster (follow)
A museum in Ipswich dedicated to all things train

There is no doubt that kids love trains. My son goes into conniptions every time a 'choo choo' goes past. So the idea of a museum dedicated to trains is amazing.

The Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich, is an interactive heritage experience located at Australia’s oldest railway workshops. They have been in operation for 150 years and have some beautiful historic buildings.

You and your family are invited to a Photography for Parents Workshop on Sunday 28th April at New Farm Park.
The Brisbane Crochet Club meets weekly to learn crochet, meet other Brisbane mums, and have a good chat. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, everyone is welcome to come along!
You can enjoy a guided tour through the workshops, and see people still working on the genuine restoration of the Heritage Steam Train Fleet. You will enjoy hearing living history from railway workers. Tours depart daily at 10:30 and 12 noon.

There are over 15 permanent exhibits to discover. These exhibits include restored carriages, the largest model railway of Queensland and Australia’s oldest working steam locomotive. There are plenty of fun and interactive activities for the kids to take part in.

My son was obsessed with all the play toy carriages, train tracks and even the mini train 'station' where you could buy tickets and push your friends around in carriages. There are train toys, books and dress ups and even a carriage with a dining car that has a toy kitchen.

If you go to the museum on a Sunday, you can also take part in Steam Train Sunday. This is where you can enjoy a train ride on an actual steam train and take a journey through yesteryear. Tickets are limited and there are conditions, so visit their website for more information.
