If there is one thing that lockdown taught my family, it is the importance of finding great local places to ride our bikes and scooters and get outside in the open air. I live in Brighton, so the Third Lagoon Bikeway and Peace Park is the perfect place to go for a family ride.
Located around Third Lagoon, with an abundance of wildlife to spot, the bikeway is perfect for children who are learning to ride their bikes or are slower on the scooter.
It is a relatively flat path that is set back from the street and quite wide. There is lots of large grassy areas and trees that run alongside it to stop along the way. It doesn't get busy at all really so I don't have to worry that my three year old will run anyone down on his bike. This is compared to the waterfront where there is much more of a chance of this happening!
When we ride on the track, I usually park my car close to Nashville Primary School then ride on the path heading towards Sandgate. There is a great playground close to the corner of Baskerville Street and Bracken Ridge Road that is about 1.2km away so the perfect distance for young children. The playground has picnic tables, play forts and swings and water bubblers, so is a good place for a rest before riding the 1.2km back. The Third Lagoon bikeway is about a 3km circuit in total so not long at all, but very scenic.
If you go the other way towards Bracken Ridge, you can ride through the wetlands and do some wildlife spotting. There is also some indigenous art that has decorated the path that is really interesting. From there you can take the path around the Deagon Wetlands.
Here is a map of the path so you can see where you can go.
I would recommend to take water, snacks and insect repellent. You can get lots of mozzies in the warmer months because it is a wetland.
What other bikeways in Brisbane would you recommend for beginner riders? Please let us know so we can check it out!
