Green Activities held throughout Brisbane to learn about sustainability and the environment

World Environment Day is a reminder that there are small things each of us can do each day to make a positive impact on the environment. It is so important more than ever to live as sustainably as possible.

Brisbane has events all year round, a lot of them free, that you can bring your children to learn about gardening, organic food, planting trees and making the most of our products and the environment.

1. [Link http://www.tayakitchen.com.au/cooking-class-calendar/ Taya Kitchen Cooking Classes]

Taya Kitchen at Enogerra has teamed up with the Brisbane City Council for the [Link https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/environment-waste/rubbish-tips-bins/recycling-reducing-waste/love-food-hate-waste Love Food Hate Waste] campaign. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the need to reduce the volume of food waste going to Brisbane landfill each year.

With a focus on Asian style meals, the class will teach you how to use up leftovers and commonly looked over ingredients. Ideal for beginners, intermediate and even experienced cooks. After cooking, participants will sit down and enjoy a meal together.

Date: Next class is Wednesday 27th June at 6:30pm and it is $50

2. [Link https://www.peakstopoints.com.au/ Peaks to Point Festival]

The 40 kilometre long Flinders-Greenbank-Karrawatha creek corridor, provides a vital sanctuary for many threatened species of flora and fauna. The corridor is under continual threat so local environment, conservation and community groups are working to retain existing natural areas and to improve degraded areas, to increase habitat connections for our native fauna.

The Peaks to Point Festival is a biennial event held on 15th July, celebrating the community's efforts to care for the creek catchments on Brisbane’s southern region. The free family fun day held at Oxley, features live entertainment, children's activities, interactive stalls and displays and food vendors.

Over a two week period, from 14th to to 29th July, there will also be bird-watching, canoeing, bus tours, bird watching, platypus watch, tree-plantings and bush walking.

3. [Link https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/environmental-programs/bushcare/ Bushcare in the Moreton Bay Region]

Bushcare is a voluntary conservation program, which provides community members with the opportunity to participate in hands-on conservation and restoration activities. Activities include plant and weed identification, tree planting, mulching, weed removal and control.

The council provides all tools and equipment, plants, mulch and refreshments



4. [Link https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/whats-on/event/nature-rangers-natures-waste-recycling-experts?referrer=%2Fwhats-on%2Fsearch%3Fp%3D5%26type%3DGreen Nature Rangers]

This is a free event aimed at children aged 10-12 years. Discover the hidden world that lies beneath leaf litter and why recycling is important to humans and the natural environment.

Did you know that the Ipswich Council provides a free plant program each year? The council gives away 120,000 plants to suit local climate and soil conditions.
