A West Ashgrove café favourite, serving up caffeine with a generous side of connection and community, is creating a beloved meeting place—one coffee at a time.

I had driven past the Corn Street Café in Ashgrove countless times, and finally decided it was time to stop and see why the café is always bustling—with customers coming and going, or enjoying conversations over a bite to eat at the tables. And it was exactly like that—mums walked in holding their children’s hands for a quick bite, students shared ideas across open laptop screens, and friends gathered to catch up on the latest news. This was community in action.

Looking through their socials, I found that
Corn Street Cafe is self-described as
"a spot to slow down, catch up, and feel right at home with Ashgrove locals, good coffee, and easy vibes. That’s what Corn St is all about."

Another point of interest is the history of the site. The cafe is steeped in local history, being housed on the busy corner in the art deco styled
Montvue Building constructed in 1937. Named Montvue, it was once one of the first self-serve grocery stores in Australia and also where the tram Terminus would stop outside, making it a central point to the transport services of the suburb. Much of the external facade of the building remains in shape.
Cafe Layout
Despite the age of the building, Corn Street Cafe has infused a modern industrial style into its interior. One of the central features is the raw, exposed Brick wall, cool concrete cement floor underfoot and an accent of blue and white in the furnishings. The circular backdrop at the entrance and counterspace is a standout when you first step inside.

The cafe has a large indoor seating area with light flooding in from the back windows and the front. Five outdoor tables line the busy curbside beside the lush curbside garden strip along the pathway, bringing a collection of mixed plants and greenery.
Through the open serving window, the kitchen buzzes with energy, giving a tantalising glimpse of where each meal is crafted and the magic of the café truly comes alive.

What's on the Menu
After finding a table on the bench seating against the brick wall, I was pleasantly surprised when a team member brought the menu—housed in a stylish, light brown leather-covered case. It’s these simple, personal touches that make a place stand out, and this was certainly one of them. So, what’s on the
menu?
Here's just a slice:
Breakfast including eggs on toast, brekkie roll and smashed avo.
Brunch and Seasonal Brunch with Breakfast tacos, Jamon and corn fritters, Polenta and mushrooms field, Ottoman toast, Banoffee Pancakes and more

Lunch is from 10 to 2pm
Caffeine from
Seven Miles coffee roasters. As well as the main menu, the cold cabinet beside the counter also has smaller snacks like toasties, quiche, sausage rolls and banana bread.
I chose the quiche and was more than impressed with the buttery base and light filling. My
Earl Grey tea came in a personal glass plunger and was made with fresh tea leaves. No tea bags here, which was lovely.
Doggo Menu
If you like dogs, you are in for a special treat. The dog-loving cafe owners have specifically catered for the four-legged by designing and delivering their own menu. Piccolo, the spunky tan
daschund (sometimes known as sausage dogs], is the cafe's mascot and the owner's family pet, and will welcome you.

He sits on his own mat at the entrance to the cafe to say hello and watch over the comings and goings. As a dog lover, seeing him was quite a surprise - wonderful of course. Astute coffee drinkers will have already picked up that
Piccolo the Pup is named after a single shot espresso with latte milk, Well, what else would it be, right?
And you might see Piccolo pop up on the menu and on the back of the staff's t-shirts in caricature, too.
