Pack your backpack, grab your water bottle and camera and get ready to take an unforgettable adventure with the team from Disney as this year's Disney on Ice production makes its way around Australia.
Mickey Mouse and his friends returned to Australia to take audiences on their "Road Trip Adventures" with an ice-skating performance and acrobatics show to thrill all ages.
I attended the opening Queensland Show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on 27 June 2024 with the promise of more than a sprinkling of that special Disney magic. And they didn't disappoint. Sure there were a lot of kids in the crowd and more than one pair of glittering mouse ears, but Disney is for all ages, right?
What Is Disney on Ice?
It is as the name suggests, the characters and stories originally imagined by American animator Walt Disney, have been adapted to an ice skating spectacular. You may remember the show under its former name, Disney's World on Ice. Over the past 42 years, the show has attracted and assembled some of the world's best professional ice skaters (including some Olympic and World champions) to dance and skate through some of Disney's favourite movies.
Road Trip Adventures
So, what can you expect from the 2024 Road Trip Adventures Show? Well, it wouldn't be
Disney without a starring appearance from the Big 4: Mickey Mouse, his girlfriend Minnie Mouse, and friends Donald Duck and Goofy. Right from the outset, they invite the audience to join them on a trip through a snapshot into some of Disney's must-see movie moments and meet the characters, stories and imaginings along the way.
The feature stories starring in the Show provided the chance to:
Meet Mary Poppins with her umbrella of course!
See Moana embark on a journey across the South Pacific seas.
Watch Olaf, Anna and Ailsa try to bring back summer in a scene from Frozen featuring the hit song "Let It Go."
See Aladdin and his magic lamp.
Follow Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Forkie and the crew from Toy Story.
Audience Participation
The big difference between the 2024
Disney on Ice Show and past performances is the addition of audience participation where those watching (particularly in the front row) took part in the show.
The show's narrators Taylor and Patrick introduced us to the stories and wandered through the crowd taking a series of photographs of audience members which were shown on giant projectors on the stage. The pictures formed part of the Road Trip Scrapbook. And there is a bit of dancing, so mums, dads and kids get ready to get out of your seats and get your groove on.
As the show began, the luckiest of members of the crowd were given the ultimate ticket - being plucked from their seats and invited to take a ride in Mickey's Road Trip open-topped vehicle. How good is that?
Road Trip Adventures also brought some other special effects including high wires, BMX riders performing daring stunts and open flames engulfing the ice.
Beyond all of the effects, it was skating that was at the heart of the show and it is unquestionably world-class. High jumping, and twisting turns on the sharp, single skating blade were nothing short of magnificent. What was my favourite feature? Aladdin was particularly spectacular with its Turkish setting and lavish Magenta costumes. It had a sense of exotic charm and with all of the segments featured a great soundtrack.
What Else
The Disney on Ice Show lasts for 90 minutes, including an interval. It was just another time and excitement for the little ones. If you haven't experienced Disney on Ice for yourself, it is well worth taking the ride. Where else can you be guaranteed a ticket inside the happiest place on earth at least for just a little while!
