The 1500-seat Theatre is the latest (and arguably greatest) in the QPAC complex and joins alongside the
Lyric Theatre , the Concert Hall,
The Playhouse and the
Cremorne Theatre in a suite of arts venues to host dance, musicals, theatre, opera, and concerts. It now means that QPAC is Australia’s largest performing arts venue under one roof,
At the Community Day, you can check out its main visual and performance features, including the glass foyers (inspired by the waters of the Brisbane River), as well as the new stage and orchestra pit where the musical magic will happen. The Glasshouse was designed by
Blight Rayner Architecture . They partnered with global designers,
Snøhetta, who brought their expertise and experience of working on cultural buildings in Oslo (including the
Norwegian National Opera and Ballet), Egypt, and New York,
At A Glance
The $184 million Glasshouse Theatre was funded by $159 million from the Queensland Government, with an additional $25 million from QPAC.
The project required over one million hours of labour to complete.
The building features 2,400 square metres of glass.
The Theatre will be open for its Community Day from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm, giving visitors the chance to explore Australia’s newest theatre. Guests can join one of the limited guided tours, catch an unexpected pop-up performance, and enjoy a drink from one of The Glasshouse Theatre’s two bars.
The Glasshouse Theatre is located at the Cultural Centre, Southbank, Brisbane.
