While there are a plethora of cafes in the city and suburbs, sometimes one comes along that stands out from the crowd for its service, its food and coffee and welcoming, community vibe. And when I made an unexpected, quick stop at Hobby Lane Cafe I wasn't expecting it to tick all the boxes but was delighted when it did.

The Layout
The café offers both indoor seating and relaxed curbside tables, perfect for soaking up the passing traffic and lively rhythm of the busy shopping strip. Inside, you can settle into one of the wall-lined tables, creating a cosy nook to enjoy your coffee while watching the world go by.

The interior colour palette is a soft interplay of mint and white, brought to life by a strong, confident dark blue that strikes a bold visual chord. Above, glass vessels cradle lush green Devil’s Ivy, their trailing vines cascading gently and making themselves at home as they weave and wander across the high shelves, adding texture, movement and a fresh, organic touch to the space.

The look has a fresh Scandi feel with cool, clean lines and pebbled cement floor. Staff are very friendly and greet each new customer.

What's on the Menu?
If you are after a light snack to have with your tea or coffee, the cold cabinet beside the counter offers a selection of muffins, biscuits, cinnamon scrolls and packets of Brisbane's own, Wholly Crumpets which are $15 per bag. For something a little more substantial or a light breakfast or lunch, there's the ham and cheese toastie (420). Hobby Steak Sandwich ($26) or specials like the Chicken Pesto, Gnudi with tomato, spinach and parmesan ($21).

There's also a kids' menu featuring:
Kids Avocado Toast
Kids Brekky
Kids Cinammon Waffles

There are so many thoughtful details throughout, most notably the strong commitment to sourcing and supporting high-quality local products. Bee One Third produces the Honey Bee One Third who aim to provide beautiful honey as well as create greater social awareness about the importance of our insect pollinator friends. The cafes' eggs come from free range Farm Knotbury Farm - a chicken egg farm located in Wyreema near Toowoomba, the bread is bespoke courtesy of Brisbane's Leavain Bakery renowned for its commitment to organic ingredients and traditional European baking techniques.

Serving Brisbane's own Bear Bones coffee . I chose a chai latte (which is a newly selected blend), and it was smooth, creamy and rich in cinnamon flavours. There are also 3 new lattes: iced matcha ($7.50), iced strawberry matcha ($8.50 and iced mango matcha ($8.50).

Supporting Local Artists
The laneway wall outside the cafe features original painted street art by renowned Drapl Brisbane based street artist who has been painting graffiti murals for 20 years.

And the support for the arts doesn't end there. To keep the café's interior wall interesting, Hobby Lane displays the work of local artists in the café,, using its professional hanging system and via its social media pages. They can house approximately 5-8 artworks depending on their size. While there is no commission fee on works sold, they do charge a hanging fee for showcasing your artwork for two months.
