Combine an explosion of art, gentle sport, a touch of competitive spirit and Brisbane's edgy riverside creative hub, and you have a game of Swingers - The Art of Mini Golf at the Brisbane Powerhouse from mid January through to March 2026.
The game of mini golf is presented in a creatively imaginative way that combines playful art with putt-putt.
The unmistable art exhibition,
Swingers- The Art of Mini Golf invites visitors to work their way through nine holes of a miniature golf course passing installations including the Wave of Fortune, indigenous art, ocean waves, wooden frames, one hole where people are wearing latex tails to hit soccer balls, a red-lit room with a disco ball, screens and large white flowers. In this course of creativity and by swinging the putters, visitors are part of this immersive, hands-on art experience.
While it is fun and colourful, there is also a serious artistic element behind the design. Each of the golf holes has been designed by leading female artists, "exploring the game's subversion history and the untold obstacles along its path." Mini golf was first created in the 19th century as a means of providing an accessible way for marginalised groups like women, people of colour and class to play the game. Through this shorter, cost-effective and entertaining game, more people could play golf without the existing barriers of time.
In that sense, mini golf was radical, imaginative and socially challenging.
Just like its beginning, no prior golf experience is needed to join in the joy of this exhibition. Simply turn up with your tickets, select a putter to suit your size, place the ball on the ground and get swinging.
