Get around Brisbane for just 50 cents
The Queensland Government just made it easier to see some of your favourite sites and places around Brisbane and other parts of the State with the upcoming introduction of public transport fares for just 50 cents.
In a cost-of-living initiative where many are finding it challenging to meet rising costs and mortgage repayments, travel around the river city just got easier and cheaper. Flat rate fares of 50 cents will apply across the Translink public transport network services from
5 August 2024. As well as affecting individual and household budgets, the strategy also aims to reduce road congestion making it easier, cheaper and faster to get around.
When riding on the transport services, you will still need to ‘tap on’ and ‘tap off’ the vehicle using
Smart Ticketing , a go card, or by purchasing a paper ticket, in order to access the reduced fare.'
So let's take a look at how and where you might take advantage of the 50 cent fares.
Buses
There are currently 1200 buses in the Council fleet. Alongside the 10 cent fares, there is also the free loops - City Loop, Spring Hill Loop and South Brisbane Loop bus services which provide high-frequency public transport access within the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD). Services also run between the CBD and Spring Hill areas and through South Brisbane and West End. (Note: This is an ongoing free service beyond the 10 cent fare initiative).
Trains
Queensland Rail operates a fleet of 47 trains and ten suburban and three interurban rail lines across South East Queensland. Fast and comfortable, the trains are a great way to get about. As well as around inner-city Brisbane, the line operates to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast through Brisbane. The Central Station and Roma Street Station are two of the key interchanges in the City which connect the network.

Arguably the most scenic way to see Brisbane is on the water by taking a comfortable cruise on one of the river ferries. River City Ferries operates a fleet of 26 City Cats catamarans, 5 smaller Kitty Cats and 1 City Ferry. The ferries stop at popular Brisbane sites including New Farm Park (home of the arts centre, The Brisbane Powerhouse, the tourist site Southbank Parklands, and shopping and restaurant mecca, Oxford Street Bulimba.
