The solar system will be providing a rare and exceptional show this March as a Blood Full Moon passes across our skies.

What happens during a Blood Full Moon? This scientific phenomenon occurs when Earth passes in between the moon and the sun and cuts off the sunlight, causing an eclipse. It is called a Blood Full Moon because it casts an eerie red glow.

The world will experience a rare Blood Full Moon (Solar Eclipse) from March 13 to 14, 2025, the last which was seen in Australia in April 2025.

On Friday, March 14, Watchers in eastern Australia will also get a brief glimpse of a partially eclipsed Moon after moonrise in Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns. Here are greater details for those Sydneysiders wanting to catch this environmental moment:

Global Event: Total Lunar Eclipse
Local Type: Partial Lunar Eclipse in Sydney, New South Wales
Begins: Friday, 14 March 2025 at 7:13 pm
Maximum: Friday, 14 March 2025 at 7:16 pm 0.450 Magnitude
Ends: Friday, 14 March 2025 at 9:00 pm
Duration: 1 hour, 46 minutes

Natural events like an eclipse are a great way for kids (and adults) to learn about and understand science, the solar system and the environment in a real way.

But be careful. Looking at the sun - even when it's partially covered like during an eclipse - can cause temporary or permanent eye damage. Only special eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer provide safety from these extreme rays.
