When was the last time you visited Bribie Island? If you answered 'never' or 'not in the last five years', then it's time we addressed that. I was in the latter category, having not been back for a period of about six years. Life is busy. I get it. You get it. Time flies past us and before you know it, your weekends are full of kid's sports and washing and cleaning and catching up with friends and that weekend away seems to evade us. Yet, one thing I know Covid 19 taught us is that getting out and about is critical for mental and physical well-being. It is therefore time you head north to
Bribie Island.
Bribie Island is the smallest and most northerly of three major sand islands forming the coastline sheltering the northern part of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. There are a number of advantages to this location for Brisbane families looking to indulge in some together time. Located an hour and twenty from Brisbane, it is a mix of untouched, open beaches, and calm, shallow, toddler-safe waterways. Brimming with military history and abundant wildlife, the views are breathtaking and the amount of shady, flat, beachside locations is unending. We spent a full day swimming, watching wildlife, indulging in local cafes and strolling aimlessly along the water. My two-year-old didn't stop running, chasing, jumping, swimming, waving, meeting and exploring for the entire day. It would definitely have been up there with one of his best days ever.
The
Seaside Museum receives excellent reviews and I understand why. Located on the Bongaree waterfront, this is an easy pleasing attraction that is great for all ages. Fit this into your agenda followed by fish and chips at the nearby cafe and then an hour at the
Butterfly House. Just remember that the Butterfly House is only open on Wednesdays and Sundays.
We visited Red Beach which was delightfully clean and warm. The kids enjoyed the gentle slope of the water and the mild waveforms. We spent some time at the RSL inspecting the tank outside and walked a length of
Sylvan Beach . The fish and chips off Bongaree were a hit, largely because they were consumed on the beach at sunset with the most inviting purple and pink hues gracing the skyline. The kids chased birds and laughed and dug in the sand, while I sat still. Yes, I did sit still and spend time inhaling the sea air and contemplating the cuteness of my babies against such a beautiful location. Life can be so good when we simply slow down and find the time to allow the peace in.
I drove home with three happy children and a stack of gorgeous photos. Above all, I drove home having filled each of our cups of life with more memories and a bucket load of sand in the car. This is an easy drive that needs to be timed outside of peak hour traffic demand. Mid-Saturday mornings can attract a rush of northbound cars and traffic congestion so try and avoid this window. You really do want to maximise your time on the island as there is much to do, and numerous ways to relax. Enjoy!
