With the school holidays speeding towards us, it's time to make a list of things to do with the kids. We love animals, so the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary is our go-to-destination every six months. For Gold Coast dwellers, it is incredible that this facility is so accessible and you can even walk to the beach afterwards. There are not too many zoos that can offer that! This attraction is well worth the drive down the highway for Brisbane dwellers.

Located on Yugambeh land, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is located at 28 Tomewin St, Currumbin and has a dedicated car park on Tomewin Street - open from 7.30 AM until 5.30 PM (except on event days). Car park fees do apply. Alternatively, you can access free street parking yet consider this a first-in-first-served arrangement. The Hospital and Sanctuary have been caring for and preserving wildlife, and nurturing indigenous heritage, for over 75 years. It is a beautiful place with the space to spend time in nature and contemplate the magnificence of our wildlife.

The Sanctuary offers numerous shows throughout the day. You will be provided with a timetable on entry and most shows are repeated throughout the day at least twice to avoid anyone missing out. The bird show would easily be classed as a Must-See-Attraction, although for those with very young families please be advised that the kids will need to sit and stay seated for the entire show.

During the school holidays, two programs are on offer. Be quick to get in early as tickets are limited. On Tuesday 11th April, Animal Trainer for a Day will run for a full day from 9 AM - 3 PM. Ideally targeting kids from 7-12 years of age, participants will learn about training techniques the Sanctuary use, both for animal health checks and behaviours for our shows. On Wednesday 12th April, Keeper for a Day will run from 9 AM to 3 PM. Kids will get to see exactly what it’s like to be a wildlife keeper. From cleaning to food preparation, health checks, enrichment and more, participants are guaranteed to walk away with a better understanding of keeper duties.

Beyond the above, these holidays the All Wild Adventure Programs will include a diverse range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and cultural immersion opportunities for participants to engage with. This experience allows students to get hands-on with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and stories, and by empowering participants through Traditional Knowledge formation and application.

The Wildlife Hospital found inside the Sanctuary is another must-see and a real credit to the many volunteers who support this facility. Take along some gold coins to through in the donation bin to keep this valuable hospital saving our wildlife and vulnerable species 365 days a year.
