It is here. The most wonderful time of the year. A time when love, great food, and the magic of children are at their very best. As every mum can tell you, Christmas Eve and morning can create some spine-tingling moments. Here are six cool ideas on how to pump up the volume on those tingles.

1. Create a quick and easy cut out of reindeer hooves in a piece of recycled cardboard. If craft is not your strength, you can easily google a template for this. Place the cutout on your floor (hard floors work best) and sprinkle some flour over the cutout, leaving evidence that reindeer have been to visit and left a little mess! (Sorry for the mess mums, but it is worth it.)

2. Have everyone in the family (helping those little ones who can't yet write) write down one word that describes 2022 to them. It can be family, goals, the name of a special place you visited, a hobby they mastered, love, or anything that means something to that person. Then have everyone reveal their word and explain their choice. Collect the pieces of paper. Staple them all together and mark them with 2022 on the back. Repeat each year. Pop them away for when the kids are older for double the treat.

3. Place some fresh towels down on the loungeroom floor, enough for each person. Pop your favourite Christmas carol on. Take it in turn to give each person a massage, maybe a foot massage or a head massage, or even a back massage. Enjoy the experience of slowing down and just being together without spending money or racing anywhere.

4. Similar to point 2, grab a tea towel or eye mask and use it as a blindfold. Grab some pens and paper and each try your hand at drawing a reindeer blindfolded. Then collect up the funny works of art and staple them together with a mark of 2022. Enjoy now, and in years to come.

5. Write a list of your most important extended family and friends (people not present). Pop on some Christmas carols in the background and each talk about your most special moments with that person throughout the year. Use your phone to record it for grandparents or extra special people and send them the video for Christmas. Trust me - it will be their most loved gift this year.

6. Go on a virtual holiday to a place you would all love to visit at Christmas. Pick a location and research interesting facts about the location. Then cook some food indicative of the location, pop on some relevant music, dress up, set up the room like a resort, and enjoy your free holiday! Have some real fun with this and dream big!

Christmas comes but once a year. Let's make it the best Christmas ever and do so without damaging the budget and by creating magical moments that will never leave your memory.
