After months of renovation, a rejuvenated Big Pineapple will open on 11 June 2024 on the Sunshine Coast with a fresh new look while maintaining the favourite things from its past.
Australia loves its BIG things as far as tourist sites go. There's the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour, the Big Lobster in South Australia and the Big Merino in Goulburn. And so the Sunshine Coast in Queensland has long had The Big Pineapple. Now this family-friendly and fruity attraction is set to welcome back visitors following a major upgrade to its facilities.
What is the Big Pineapple?
The
Big Pineapple opened in 1971 and soon became a must-do tourist attraction on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. It was the place of school excursions and family day trips which, if you were lucky, included a ride on the train, a visit to the animal farm and an ice cream and cream parfait in the cafe at the end of exploring the facility. Life was simply sweet.
The centrepiece of The Big Pineapple is a massive man-made structure of the golden, summery fruit which visitors can enter and learn all about the pineapple industry including the growing process. In Queensland, pineapples are grown in Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast, Yeppoon, Coastal North Queensland and Atherton Tableland regions.
Attractions
The Big Pineapple has been undergoing a facelift and Stage 1 of the renovation is nearing completion seeing it reopen to the public at 10 am on Tuesday 11 June 2024. Visitors will be able to experience the upgrade and see:
The new Pavilion with its cafe serving fresh home-style food and premium coffee
The new children's playground
A huge viewing deck which surrounds the big pineapple structure where you can view the pineapple plantations
It is hoped that the train may be running but if not will be on display at the Plantation Station for everyone to see
The renovations to the giant 19 metre, 2-storey fibreglass pineapple structure are still ongoing and will not be ready in time for the Stage 1 re-opening but stay tuned. More is on the way.
