Travel 15km southwest of Nerang on the Gold Coast and you will end up at the main drinking water supply for the region, Hinze Dam . With a significant upgrade in 2011, this is not just a dam. It's a dam and cafe, a function centre and playground, a picnic area and a hiking track. It is a great place to stretch your legs without stretching the budget. It is also a fabulous place for the amateur photographer, with miles of blue and green, and everything in between.

Hinze Dam is a great school holiday day trip whether you live in Brisbane or the Gold Coast. It offers options. It can be an active, walk-until-you-drop-kind of adventure or it can suit the "let's have a latte" crowd, happy to soak up the view and a gentle stroll from the carpark. It is largely pram friendly and a good place to balance time in the sun with a coffee and milkshake from the cafe.

Parking is plentiful and general facilities such as toilets, pathways, BBQs, picnic tables, and playground equipment are all largely new. If you are looking for somewhere to host a family gathering or birthday party, this may not have been on your list but certainly could be. My kids found the playground kept them busy for a good couple of hours while dog walkers strolled by and an abundance of bird and animal life watched on. The playground is sheltered under a shade sail which is also sun friendly. It can get very hot here so shade is a great asset.

Located on Yugambeh Land at 100 Advancetown Road, Advancetown, the site is open from 5:30 am to 6:30 pm each day. Outside of site hours, the gates are locked. The View Cafe is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. The cafe is airy and modern, and the perfect place to recharge after your hike around the dam and before you start your journey home. The food is largely fresh and homemade and is reasonably priced. There are also souvenirs to purchase if you are keen on a bookmark, pencil or postcard.

Keep in mind this is a drinking water dam and so some water activities are restricted. It is popular with horseriders, cyclists, hikers and families. For the fishermen, this is a playground for hooking golden and silver perch, saratoga, Mary River cod and Australian bass from either The Western (Nerang Murwillumbah Road) or Eastern Boat Ramp (Little Nerang and Range Roads). If the dam is spilling, you will get a terrific roar from the water pouring over the spillway.

The view from the wall is fabulous and the time spent outdoors with your little ones is well worth the trip there. You need sunscreen, hats, walking shoes, picnic rugs, drink bottles and snacks. Enjoy your time at Hinze Dam.
