One of the happiest, floral events of the year returns to South East Queensland with the Kalbar Sunflower Festival set to bloom from 1 May to 3 May 2026.
Whether you're chasing the perfect photo, a weekend escape, or simply a reason to embrace the outdoors, the Kalbar Sunflower Festival is a joyful reminder to pause, breathe deeply, and enjoy nature at its brightest.
Why sunflowers? Well, the sunflower is more than your average flower. Did you know that these brilliant yellow blooms naturally turn toward the sun, which is why they’re often seen as symbols of happiness, positivity and hope. Their bright yellow petals instantly create a cheerful atmosphere and are known to boost wellbeing simply by being around them. So imagine seeing and walking amongst them en masse.
But for this community and family, sunflowers and this festival are more than just a floral beauty. They were born out of a commercial necessity. The Kalbar community event burst onto the festival scene in 2021 when Kalbar farmers Russell Jenner and Jenny Jenner were searching for a solution during severe drought conditions. Unable to grow their usual crops, they planted sunflowers instead — creating a vibrant field that quickly captured the attention of visitors.
Seeing the joy the flowers brought, the Jenners opened their farm to the public, and the sunflower fields soon grew into an annual festival celebrating rural life, community connection and the beauty of the Scenic Rim.
What Happens at The Festival
The festival is packed with opportunities to:
- Walk (or skip) through the sunflower fields;
- Take photos of your own as the sunflowers as the backdrop, stop by the pop-up props or book a themed photo session
- Markets
- Entertainment
- Competitions (count the sunflowers in the field)
Supporting Charity
The
Kalbar Sunflower Festival is not only a stunning celebration of sunflower season and a photographer's haven, but it is also a heartfelt cancer fundraiser. After Russell Jenner was diagnosed with cancer, the festival took on a deeper purpose, becoming a fundraiser supporting cancer care and palliative services.
While visitors come to enjoy the bright fields, local markets, food stalls and entertainment, importantly, the event also raises vital funds and awareness for cancer support and research.
Every ticket purchased helps make a difference, turning a day surrounded by sunshine and community spirit into an opportunity to support a major cause - an issue close to the organisers' hearts. Today, the festival continues in his honour, welcoming thousands of visitors each year and standing as a symbol of hope, resilience and community spirit.
Tickets range from $15-$35. (Note that they are non-refundable but transferable).
You will find the festival at 56 Warumkarie Rd, Kalbar, QLD. Kalbar is 1 hour south-west of Brisbane, 20 minutes from Boonah and just over an hour from the Gold Coast
