There is something magical about Mount Samson. There is something serene about a Deer Sanctuary. There is something valuable in allowing children to explore nature, care for animals, and detach from technology.
Lyell Deer Sanctuary ticks all of these boxes and then some.
Against the most spectacular Aussie backdrop, the Deer Sanctuary provides a lovely Christmas and school holiday family outing. My children were beside themselves over the chance to get up close and personal with a real-life reindeer! And it is the season to do it! Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm, no bookings are required. It is $5 per adult and $3 for each child aged 2 to 16. You can purchase a bag of deer food for $1 as well, as long as you are prepared to become the star attraction the moment the deer find out you have food!
The Sanctuary is set up to visit with the deer, pet a cow, snuggle a guinea pig or two, and chat with a goat. Free tea and coffee are provided. You can spend as much or as little time as you would like in the deer paddock and it is a very safe experience for young children. My one-year-old got very dirty, was thrilled feeding the deer, and couldn't get enough of the two-week-old baby deer that had recently been rescued from the side of the highway. The greatest risk to the kids is rolling down the hill as the incline of the paddock is quite steep. It truly is a great place to come together as a family and let everything else just pass you by.
Located at
6 Lyell Court, Mount Samson , the drive out is stunning. You can grab a milkshake and a coffee in the quaint village of Samford. Try
Spokes Cafe or
Little Tree Bakehouse . Samford Village is a place where time appears to stand still, and old-fashioned bakeries and cafes thrive. The roads can be quite windy and narrow in places so take your time getting there.
This weekend, consider a date with the deers!
