5 Things To See at TC Beirne Park
TC Beirne Park is a place to play, picnic, exercise and gather, as well as serving as a tribute to recognise key figures in Brisbane's history.

The northern Brisbane suburb of Hendra is a popular suburban haven with family homes and retail outlets, but it is also the place where Brisbane's past meets its present.

TC Beirne Park is an open-air green space and playground which is
FREE to everyone to enjoy the outdoors. But who is its namesake? More about that later, but first let's explore the park's special features. Here are my top 5:
1. Kids' play equipment
One of the major elements of the park is a specially designed children's play area with a collection of fun and physically interactive equipment. Swings, climbing equipment, wobbly bridges, slippery slides, planes and rockers are all included in the mix. There's a cute little shop window hidden under the slide, too.
Don't miss one of the unique features of this park and be sure to look out for the specially designed vintage car climbing equipment. For me, this was a one-of-a-kind piece (possibly styled on a 1920s model car) and certainly brought a point of difference and charm to the park.

One of the special features of this TC Beirne park is that it is fully fenced, making it extra safe for curious little people who want to run on the grass and play. Parents and carers have the bonus of comfort to let them explore more safely.
2. Exercise equipment
While the kids can burn off energy on the play equipment, the park also boasts adult gym equipment for a morning or afternoon training session. No gym membership required here. It's all free to use, and an easy way to get fit and combine with a morning walk.
3. BBQs
The Council maintained park also has free BBQs, which are clean and well-maintained. Perfect for a family lunch after all of that play. There are also water coolers and single park benches to rest and refresh.
4. Heritage style sitting huts
A series of hexagonal rotundas have been built in the park with heritage features befitting the suburb. Decking rails surround the huts, making them private and semi-enclosed. They are great for shelter during picnics, for reading or getting together for a quick chat.

5. Grassy space and trees
T C Beirne Park once formed part of the grounds of its namesake's nearby Hendra home, Glengariff. Today it is spoilt with lush green grass and mature trees, which are perfect to provide shade for a picnic or to lean against while reading a book.
Who is TC Beirne?
The park was named after TC Beirne, but who is this figure, and what made them significant to Brisbane? After a little research, I discovered that Thomas Charles (TC) Beirne was a businessman, politician and philanthropist in colonial and federation era Queensland. From 1905 until 1922, he was a member of the
Queensland Legislative Council .
Amongst residents, he was well known for his successful drapery business and department store. As one of Australia’s first millionaires, part of his lasting legacy was as Warden of the
University of Queensland and in 1935 donated £20,000 to establish the TC Beirne School of Law. A plaque at the entrance to the park gives a brief background and introduction to this influential Queenslander and former
Hendra,_Queensland Hendra resident.

For play time with the kids or a place to enjoy the outdoors, TC Beirne Park is open 24/7 and is located at 77 Gerler Road, Hendra, 6 kilometres from the Brisbane Central Business District. It is worth exploring to walk in Mr Beirne's historic footsteps.
