It's official! Holiday season is here and keeping the kids entertained is a focal point. If you are looking for fresh air, good food, a chance to get back to basics, and a touch of education thrown in, then
Maleny Dairies is for you. Located at 70 McCarthy Road, Maleny, Queensland, this trip is worth taking.
Open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, this is a chance to show the kids where milk comes from, taste a range of dairy products, feed some calves, and pat a sheep or two. The rolling Maleny hills give rise to a great picnic spot and the kids can move about without fear of restriction. My kids love climbing the huge old fallen tree in the yard of the dairy farm, while I indulge in a coffee. There are old tractors to climb on and have your photo taken.
Farm tours are available from Monday to Saturday and are worth the investment. The family pass including two adults and three kids for $65 works out to be the best way to go. You need to book online ahead of time as they are often sold out when you arrive. They are easy walking and the calf feeding is a highlight. Plan for the kids to be sucked, dripped on, fall down, get up, and laugh a lot. And yes, plan for them to get dirty. The huge windmill in the middle of the field is a great attraction and I've snapped some great photos beneath its footprint.
While not classed as milkshakes on their menu, the caramel frappes are a delight for the kids. There can't be anything better than milk straight from the farm. This is an award-winning, family-run business that Queenslanders can be proud of. Its carbon-positive approach is an added bonus. We usually spend about two hours at the farm and then head up to the main street of Maleny for some further sightseeing. It truly is a stunning part of the world and full of things to do for the young and young-at-heart.
