The Royal Queensland Show, locally known as Ekka , which brings a little bit of country life to the city will run in Brisbane for 9 days from the 10th to 18th August, 2024 with fun for the whole family.

Showcasing some of Queensland's best livestock, locally grown produce, hand created arts and crafts, cookery, fashion, music and more, Ekka is an annual Brisbane tradition.

Ekka is held at the Brisbane Showgrounds which is owned and operated by the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA). With a long tradition, the RNA aims to educate, entertain and cultivate connections from the country and the city while recognising the State's heritage and future focus. The annual 9-day exhibition is the perfect opportunity to showcase, celebrate and experience agriculture and Queensland.

Here is just a taste of what you can expect at this year's show.

At its heart, Ekka is an agricultural show which attracts some 10,000 animals and therefore competitions to find the best in show - a prize which is always highly sought after. Categories including canine dogs (with breed specific days), cats, dairy goats, dairy cattle, fish and more will compete for this prestigious Award.

One of my favourite visits, is a walk through the arts and craft competitions. The creative creations of Queenslanders are on display in categories such as cake decorating, cookery, and sewn quilts. These traditional, artisan skills showing intricate and detailed hand created works are something special.

Away from the competition, one of the most popular sites is the RACQ Animal Nursery where children can get up close with baby farmyard animals. Who can resist seeing cute chickens and lovable lambs. When it comes to animals, the sheep dogs trials show the intelligence and importance of working dogs to farm life,

With dodgem cars, a giant ferris wheel and a merry-go-round, the show's classic daring, thrill seeking rides in sideshow alley are sure to bring a few screams, while the sample showbags like Barbie and Bertie Beetle are a must have to carry over your arm.

This year, the Showbags come with a twist. Ekka is running a showbag competition for school students from Prep to Year 6 where they could win showbags for their whole school class. To enter, children simply have to design a 3D model or illustration of their ultimate dreambag showbag, give it a name and list the items it would contain Check the site for more information here.

Of course, who can walk past the laughing clown competition and resist trying their luck to possibly win a cuddly toy prize to take home.

One of the key features of the show is the free entertainment in the Main Ring for ticket holders, finishing with the nightly bang of the light and bright fireworks display.

And of course, for many one of the major drawcards for visiting the show is to enjoy the fresh chopped strawberry ice-creams topped with cream, provided through The Common Good in support of The Prince Charles Hospital . The ice cream was first introduced in 1950 and has become an Ekka staple and let's be honest, one of the main reasons to visit the show. Today, each strawberry sundae sold helps to fund life-changing medical research to help the community live healthier for longer. You can even volunteer and help make and sell these sweet, creamy sundaes at the Show.

When it comes to Ekka once a year food treats, then fairy floss, dagwood dogs and steak burgers are a naughty must.
