Garry Stewart, that globe-trotting choreographer bloke, has hooked up with Queensland Ballet for Elastic Hearts, a fresh production scored to Sia's hits reimagined as orchestral goodness by Elliott Wheeler and banged out by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Right in the middle is Gaia, the Earth goddess herself, trucking through her usual drama of wrecking, rebuilding, and reinventing. The dancers pull off this resilient, we're-all-in-it-together vibe that feels surprisingly relatable for a ballet.
Meanwhile, the stage gets in on the fun with forests popping up like they've had too much fertiliser, swings arcing through the air, ramps shuffling about, and a gigantic pink heart that unfurls like it's shyly stealing the show. It's got that raw emotional punch mixed with eye-candy visuals, basically nodding to how us humans stretch like rubber bands, roll with the punches, and somehow keep bouncing back.
