Ready to kick winter off in the Sunshine Coast way? The
9th Annual Solstice Swim is back at Alexandra Headland - and whether you’re a seasoned ocean swimmer or just keen to dip your toe in (literally), there’s a distance for everyone! Presented by the
Alexandra Headland Rotary Club ,
MIX FM and
Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club, the Sunshine Coast Solstice Swim is a healthy and fun community swim event, run
"by the community for the community". The swim is all about camaraderie, good vibes and fun!
Did I mention it's also a great way to start - and stay - in shape throughout winter?
A 50m nearly naked splash for those wanting to celebrate the start of the new celestial year
Choose from a 50m splash, a 500m, 1km, 3km or a 5km swim; soak up the buzzing beachside atmosphere and join hundreds of locals doing something epic for a great cause. Swimmers and their cheering squad can expect spectacular ocean views, community vibes, post-swim boasting rights and a seriously feel-good morning at the beach.
•
50m splash is recognition that Sunday is, in fact, the Solstice date and the organisers have put on a very short course where swimmers can get nearly naked to have a dip to celebrate the start of the new celestial year. No race, no pressure, just a dip you want, but nearly naked, i.e. NO wetsuits… budgie smugglers and bikinis only.
•
500m - a gentle swim for younger kids (minimum age 10) and first timers to ocean swimming.
•
1km - a comfortable swim distance for moderate fitness swimmers
•
3km - a testing swim distance, suggested for swimmers who have previously completed the same or similar distance in an ocean swimming event
•
5km - for serious swimmers only - not for the faint-hearted!
A winter morning on the Sunny Coast is usually spectacular
•The Solstice Swim Junior Dash minimum age is ten; for all other swim distances, entrants must be 14 years or older.
•All swim participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present on event day.
•All swim legs are chaperoned on boards and jet skis by the Alex Headland Lifesavers.
•All events commence with a safety briefing on the beach by the AHSLC swim captain.
All for a good cause ...
This year, 2026, the Solstice Swim Event will raise funds for
Give Me 5 - Wishlist, supporting sick kids and their families across the Sunshine Coast. Every dollar raised helps provide vital medical equipment, services and support for local families when they need it most — so every splash really can make a difference.
Continuing their relationship with
MultiSport Australia, the organisers of the 9th Annual Solstice Swim event will be supplying timing anklets to all swimmers - to provide peace of mind and, of course, that all-important personal best time.
PLEASE NOTE: No anklets will be issued for the 50m "nearly naked" swim....it’s just a fun event to celebrate the actual date of the Solstice. Some "swimmers" love to just get their feet wet to show support for the
beneficiary charity and to commemorate the Solstice.
First swim wave leaves at about 8.00am
