Now in its 26th year, National Walk Safely to School Day on 22 May 2026 is a fun, feel-good event that gets kids ditching the car ride and heading to school on foot, scooter, or bike instead.

Held each May across Australia, it's all about fresh air, healthy habits, road safety skills, and starting the school day with energy and smiles.



Think happy footsteps, chatting with friends along the way, and a great reminder that sometimes the best journey to school is the simplest one - one step at a time!

Schools can jump into National Walk Safely to School Day by turning the morning school run into a mini celebration! Encourage students to walk, ride or scoot to school, welcome them at the gate with music or high-fives, run fun class challenges, and sneak in some road safety learning along the way.



It's all about happy steps, healthy kids, and starting the school day with fresh air, big smiles and a strong sense of community. You might decide to walk with Friends and meet up with neighbours or classmates and create a mini walking group - kids love arriving together. To practise Road Safety Use the walk as a chance to teach safe crossings, looking both ways and awareness around driveways and traffic.
