I am a mother of three young children. I get the need to find day trips that will make them smile, within budget, within an hour's drive, and that do not require little people to sit still for any length of time. Even more enticing are adventures that help kids learn about the world around them, are pram friendly, and come with a decent cup of coffee. Introducing
Sumer Land Camels .
Now I must first declare that I have taken my children to this destination more than once. The reason for this, quite honestly, is because I enjoy it every bit as much as them. I am originally from the country so enabling my children to run around a farm, feed animals, roll in a little dirt, and breathe some country air are elements that I value. If you asked my children, they would tell you rather adamantly they love the place because the baby camels are “sooooo cute”. This is a safe attraction where caregivers can allow little kids to relax and secure some camel feed in their hair.
Located an hour west of Brisbane, my only disclaimer in recommending this place is to save it for a sunny day. Having been there during a torrential downpour and later, on a beautiful summer's day, the need to park in a paddock and walk across the dirt entry means that attempting it in the rain is not your best idea. This is especially true if you need to take a pram.
My girls, six and four, have experienced the camel ride around the farm. I had to stay behind with my one-year-old, yet I could hear Miss Four squealing in delight from the beginning of the tour until the very end. Hard hats are provided, and the tour guides are incredible with little ones. Had I not had Master One with me, I would have loved to have gone too. The tour goes past the main farm building and onto the nursery. As previously stated, the baby camels are “sooooo cute”.
After buying the kids their inexpensive bags of camel food and allowing them to get up close and personal with some truly soft creatures, coffee for me and hot chips for the kids are always in order at the Farm Café. You can sit on the deck of the majestic Queenslander and enjoy the striking turquoise mountain view. It is a great opportunity for the amateur photographer within all of us.
Tours and events can be booked online in advance. The annual kids' Christmas party is an upcoming event worthy of consideration. Just remember to pack your hats and sunscreen, expect to get dirty, and enjoy the challenge of snapping the best selfie with an obliging camel.
